The Progression and Future of Endoscopic Spine Surgery in ANZ

This session will discuss:
  • Introduction on the current state of endoscopic spine surgery in Australia.
  • Reasons to believe in endoscopic spine surgery as it becomes standard practice globally.
  • Early experiences and progression of endoscopic spine surgery in Australia over the past year. 
  • The future of endoscopic spine surgery expanding the technique into the cervical and thoracic spine and future applications (fusions)

SPEAKERS: 

Christoph Hofstetter, M.D., Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington. He is a neurosurgeon specializing in complex spine surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques. His primary clinical focus is on the surgical treatment of degenerative spinal disorders, including disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis and cervical myelopathy, as well as, spinal oncology. Dr. Hofstetter received his M.D. from the University of Vienna, Austria, and earned his Ph.D. at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on experimental treatment strategies for traumatic spinal cord injuries. He then completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Hofstetter completed clinical fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic and a spine fellowship focusing on complex minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of Miami.

Dr Shanu Gambhir is an Australian trained Neurosurgeon and Spine surgeon. He specialises in minimally invasive (key hole) surgery, endoscopic surgery, complex spinal and cranial surgery. He practices a minimalistic approach to ensure the best patient outcomes.Dr Gambhir completed his advanced training in Neurosurgery through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon (RACS) at major tertiary hospitals in Australia – Royal North Shore Hospital, St. George Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Westmead Public Hospital and Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons(RACS), member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia (NSA) and Australian Medical Association (AMA).He completed his undergraduate medical degree at the university of Otago in New Zealand and a Masters of Surgery in Neurosurgery (MS) at The University of Sydney. He is actively involved in research as well as teaching.

Dr Yingda Li is an Australian trained Neurosurgeon who is also a Fellowship trained Spinal Surgeon. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 2008, and underwent basic surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, followed by advanced Neurosurgical training at Westmead Hospital, St George Hospital, Royal Adelaide Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre and Wollongong Hospital. He was thrice awarded the Trainee Prize during his Neurosurgical training. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Neurosurgery in 2019.

Dr Li went on to a complete a 6-month general Neurosurgical Fellowship at Westmead Hospital. This was followed by a 12-month Complex and Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Miami, the busiest academic Spine institution in North America, where he gained extensive experience and skills in all aspects of Spinal Surgery, including advanced Endoscopic and Robotic techniques.

Dr Li has a strong interest in teaching and research, has over 20 peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts and book chapters, and serves as Reviewer for several leading Neurosurgical journals, including World Neurosurgery and The Spine Journal.

Dr Li is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.
