MEET KEYNOTE SPEAKERS 


Adjunct Professor Shelley Nowlan

The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer role is critical in providing state-wide strategic and professional leadership for nursing and midwifery services in Queensland. Shelley has represented the Queensland nurses and midwives at a state, national and international level as Chief Nursing and Midwifery officer since 2016.

During this time OCNMO has delivered key Government election commitments with new nursing and Midwifery positions, the introduction of nursing ratios, introduction of the Nurse Navigator Program, implementation of the EB10 commitments and the $10million dollar innovation fund seeing new nurse and midwifery led models of care across the state.  The Office has also assisted in the introduction of important policy where nurses and midwives contribute daily to care for Queensland communities.

Shelley also is the Australian Government Deputy National Rural Health Commissioner for Nursing and Midwifery. She represents Nurses at an international level as International Council of Nurses WHO Western Pacific Region Nursing lead.

Shelley is currently focused on early career pathways for graduate Nurses and Midwives by producing operational programs that produce effective nursing and midwifery outcomes for Queensland. Shelley is also passionate about ensuring nursing and midwifery strategy provides sustainable and accessible nursing and midwifery care to regional and rural communities throughout Queensland.

Damian Green

Damian Green, Deputy Director-General eHealth Queensland, is leading Queensland’s public health digital modernisation agenda.

Previously as Executive Director, Digital Transformation and Chief Information Officer, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Damian led the delivery of Gold Coast Health’s two-year journey to become a fully digital hospital and was pivotal in driving continuous improvement in health service delivery and quality.

Damian is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health, Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management and Adjunct Professor School of Business Strategy and Innovation, Griffith University. Damian is also a Board Director of the Gold Coast Primary Health Network and is a member of the Boards of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health and the Australian E-Health Research Centre, a joint venture between the Queensland Government and CSIRO.

Bernadette Thomson

Bernadette Thomson (RN, RM MEd) is the  Nursing Director of Education at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Metro South Health Queensland and Clinical Associate Professor at Queensland University Technology.  Bernadette has experience in the VET and Tertiary sector and has been working at MSH since 2008 and in her current role since 2011.  She has a background in paediatrics, NICU and gynaecology nursing.  Bernadette is committed to building the capability of staff through the development and implementation of innovative education models.  Her other interest area is building the profile of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice across the HHS.  Bernadette is the current chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Directors Education Forum, a state wide group working to meet the education needs of nurses and midwives across Queensland Health.

Whilst the Pandemic has significantly impacted the work of nursing and midwifery educators,  Bernadette sees that we now have the opportunity to build on the innovation and creativity which has emerged over the past 3 years.

Dr Lynda Hughes

Dr Hughes is a Senior Lecturer, and the Program Director of the Bachelor of Nursing within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University. As an early career researcher having completed her PhD in 2020 focusing on failure to fail in clinical course, she has a strong education-focused research profile covering the breadth of areas around quality graduate outcomes through innovative teaching. She has an emerging track record in teaching and learning projects around partnering with students, consumers and the multi-disciplinary team for better learning outcomes. She is a member of the National Placement Evaluation Centre which focuses on national benchmarking for quality placements. She has been successful in over $350,000 grant funding. Her research outputs include 12 referred journal publications: 164 citations, h-index 6, i10-index 6, educational resources (blog), with 19 international conference abstract presentations, demonstrating her ability to promote broad dissemination of her research findings in a relative short period of time. She is developing an international reputation for her work, including participation in international teams exploring learning and teaching in nursing.

Prof Amanda Wilson

Professor Amanda Wilson is Deputy Head of the School Teaching and Learning in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Technology Sydney. Amanda has a background in clinical and public health research with over 120 publications in peer-reviewed, high impact, and internationally respected journals, including 10 Cochrane reviews. Her citation rate is high and her SCOPUS h-index is over 35. Amanda has an established research portfolio and her work on the quality of health information in the general media included the development of a website and e-rating tool which were reproduced in seven different countries. She has worked with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to develop a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses e-learning tool, is on the Advisory Committee for Excellent in Smoking Cessation Training, Education and Resources for the Cancer Institute of NSW, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Nursing Research Sub Group Committee and the 2022-25 Global Secretariat for WHO N&M Collaborating Centres. Amanda is also a published poet and creative writer and completed a master's degree in creative writing as well as a BA and Honours degree in English literature.
