Aaron Kearney - 8th National Men's Shed Gathering MC
Aaron Kearney is a multi-award winning broadcaster, journalist and sports commentator with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the 44th MEAA Prodi Journalist of the Year 2011. He is a Walkley Award and four-time New York Festival World Radio Award winner, Kennedy Award finalist and is one of the few Australians to win awards for his work for television, radio and newspapers, magazines and online.
He is described by comedian Mikey Robins as "the greatest broadcaster you've never heard of" and is currently working in media consultancy, sports diplomacy and broadcast development in Australia and overseas.
He is a regular contributor to several programs on the BBC World Service and Radio Australia, an A-League Soccer/Football Commentator, has called the W-League for ABC TV and a freelance writer.
He has covered some of the world major sports events from the Olympics, to the FIFA and Rugby League World Cups and AFC Champions League and is the creator of a Sports Commentary training course used by broadcasters in Papua New Guinea and the Tiwi Islands.
‘Cape Town to Cairo – The Ultimate African Safari’ Series consisted of four one-hour documentaries following a four-wheel drive expedition the length of Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to the Mediterranean Sea. The death-defying six weeks of filming risked Kearney and his teams’ lives under extreme circumstances, dealing with everything from wildlife to rebel gangs of militia. He also completed the Kokoda Track in 2008.
Dr Joe Dunn - Psychs on Bikes
‘Psychs on Bikes’ was started entirely by accident. In 2011, Dr Joseph Dunn just wanted to ride a motorbike across the Nullarbor Plain but ended up starting a national mental health charity. There are over 200 psychologists, mental health nurses and psychiatrists on the mailing list and most of their annual ‘Big Rides’ attract more than 20 riders.
Their goals are to raise awareness about mental health and share their knowledge to help rural and regional towns.
‘Psychs on Bikes’ conduct free men’s health checks, speak to local media and engage in meetings and education sessions with colleagues, Rotary, Men’s Sheds, schools, community mental health centres and anyone who can be bothered to listen.
Why focus on mental health in the Bush?
Because the suicide rate is nearly twice what it is in the city and in the Bush people struggle to access services; de-stigmatisation of mental illness is moving in regional Australia a little too slowly, even if attitudes are changing for the better. Living in small town Australia can be a challenge. A lack of privacy in a small community, stretched healthcare services, local economies that run boom-or-bust according to the weather and commodity markets. Life in the bush can be peaceful, unpretentious and communal but it can be really tough too.
Over the years the psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health nurses riding with PoB have raised awareness, interacted with local health professionals and conducted hundreds of free men’s health checks in which we try to engage blokes in talking about not only their physical but their emotional wellbeing.

Tom Grant, Helping your Shed Be Connected: running digital skills programs
Tom recruits organisations into the Be Connected Network. He takes pride in the fact that the Be Connected Network will help Australian seniors take their first steps into the digital world. "Seniors are going to soon be at a significant disadvantage by not having the basic digitals required to navigate the online world. Knowing that I'm helping to change this give me great satisfaction."
Is your Men's Shed a place people can go to ask for help with using their phone, computer or tablet? Join over 2,500 community organisations who are delivering community-based digital skills learning. 2.5 million people in Australia don't have the basic digital skills they need to manage in today's increasingly digital world. Unfortunately people who lack digital skills face issues accessing services, applying for jobs and are at higher risk of social isolation. Men's Shed across Australia are using Be Connected to access learning resources and fund their digital skills sessions using the flexible grants program. Come to this workshop to find out how your Shed can benefit from joining the network and how your men can benefit from learning digital skills.
