Dr Jonathon Ball

Neurosurgeon

Dr Ball is an Australian Neurosurgeon specialising in surgery of the spine. He is based at the North Shore Hospital Campus in Sydney, where he was previously the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Royal North Shore Hospital.  After training in neurosurgery, he completed further specialised training in spine surgery with a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgery fellowship at the University of Calgary in Canada. 

Dr Ball’s clinical practice focusses exclusively on spinal surgery with a particular interest in complex surgery for tumours, deformity and trauma. He is one of two neurosurgeons in the RNSH Spinal Injuries Unit, providing services to spinal injured patients from the northern half of NSW. He has additionally qualified with postgraduate qualifications in biomedical engineering. 

Dr Ball is committed to various spinal research projects and surgical education, to improve care for patients. He has active interests in clinical outcome research, basic biomechanics studies and acute spinal cord injury research. He has been a keen advocate of spinal surgery navigation technology including the introduction of robotic guided spine surgery in Australia.”


Professor Arun Krishnan

Neurologist

Arun Krishnan is Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW Sydney and is Head of the Neuromuscular Disease Research Group in the Prince of Wales Clinical School. He is also a neurologist at Prince of Wales Hospital, where he directs a multidisciplinary Nerve and Muscle clinic.He is an authority in the area of peripheral nerve injury, particularly in neuropathies due to metabolic and toxic aetiologies. His research involves the development of new markers for nerve injury and in providing insights into pathophysiology. He has also led a number of clinical trials of novel interventions for peripheral neuropathy.


Dr Samya Lakis

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Samya is an Orthopaedic surgeon with post fellowship training in adult and paediatric spine surgery. She undertook specific training in the area of paediatric spine deformity and is working at Sydney Children’s Hospital, in addition to an adult practice at the Prince of Wales Spine unit. Samya has always been a keen teacher, delivering talks to universities and professional bodies, and through her roles in RACS, AOA, APOS and the SSA.



Dr Ralph Stanford

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Ralph Stanford is an orthopaedic surgeon with post-fellowship training in spinal surgery and surgical management of spinal cord injury. He is experienced in surgical approaches to all regions of the spine. His areas of clinical interest are disorders of the adult spine including degenerative disease, tumours, trauma, infection, inflammatory conditions and acquired deformity. He is closely involved in the management of spinal cord injury at Prince of Wales Hospital and sits on committees responsible for spinal cord injury at hospital, area health and state-wide levels.
